Gung Hay Fat Choy (Round 2)

The video wouldn't upload onto the other post because we had too many pictures so here is a video of our dragon parade!!! What an absolute blast - the kids loved it! Feel free to ask them about the details and traditions of the Chinese New Year - today they rattled off 17 facts!!!!

Have a great weekend!

Love,
Ms. Moffatt

Gung Hay Fat Choy!!

GUNG HAY FAT CHOY TO EVERYONE!!
Wishing you a happy new year from China!! Today is the Chinese New Year! This week we have had so much fun in China! We learned how to use chopsticks and we ate popcorn and rice (see pictures below!) Chopsticks were hard to eat with because if you had soya sauce, you couldn't even pick it up it was so slippery! We had to hold the plate up to our mouth and then use the chopstick to shovel it in!!!

We also used the iPads to search about the Great Wall of China and we took a tour of the Great Wall (it's HUGE - it is longer than Canada is coast to coast but the wall isn't straight, it's all curvy and goes up mountains). Yesterday we made our paper dragons for our Chinese New Year parade. We also ate fortune cookies today to celebrate and got our fortunes!

e

This is us using the iPads while looking for information about the Great Wall of China!

In math, we used place value blocks to build our names. We are going to calculate what our names are worth next week!!!

Did you get our postcards? We wanted to let you know that we are staying in China for a few MORE days because we still have a whole bunch of other things to do!!

Still In China... Be Home Soon!

Hello from China! It's a beautiful day in Shanghai - the temperature is 11 degrees Celsius! We hear its not very nice in Winnipeg - wish you were here! This week in China we learned about the Zodiac animals. Did you know why the cat isn't a zodiac sign? The cat didn't even finish the Jade Emporer's race... The winner was the rat and thats why the rat is the first year in the Chinese calendar!

We practice Tai Chi in a quiet park. Tai Chi is like karate but calm and relaxing. It works on your health, balance and relaxation. It's like meditating!

Today we learned the numbers in Chinese and made our own Chinese Counting Books!

We've been doing in math in China too. We're still learning about place value. Some of our centres this week were a card game with building numbers, the Smart Board and of course, the Ms. Moffatt station. (Ms. Moffatt's side note: I love that all the kids cheer when they hear they are coming to my station! It's my favourite!)

Next week in China we are going to learn how to use CHOPSTICKS and we are going to make our dragons for CHINESE NEW YEARS!

It was an awesome week and we can't wait for next week!

A Super Time in Shanghai....

This week room 40 travelled to CHINA!

First, we 'packed' our suitcases with our passports and our travel journals. Once we are all finished packing our suitcases, we got our chairs and brought them to the carpet and pretended we were on an airplane! We 'booked' our flight which cost us $2000 EACH! We also checked the weather and it was 4 degrees Celsius and it was actually 4:00 Friday in China. Then we looked at a video of a plane and  pretended we were on an airplane for real. Ms. Moffatt was pretending she was a flight attendant and said "sit back and relax and enjoy the ride!" When we arrived in China, we got a passport stamp for China! Then, we read books about China and one cool thing we learned was they have 500 million bikes in China. We are staying in China until January 31st because it will be the Chinese New Year AND Vivianne's birthday! We can't wait to head to the Philippines next!

In math today, we played a "I have, Who has" place value game and it took us 3 minutes and 13 seconds and 67 milliseconds to go through all the cards. We also did place value centres for math too.

We did the good copy of our flags for Lunenburg. There are no city or town flags for Lunenburg SOOO we made our own that had at least 3 different symbols of Lunenburg! Check these out...

This week we got our iPads and everyone was excited! We've used them for math, choice time and daily 5. Our favourite apps include angry birds rio, hangmouse (which is a spelling game), math vs. the undead, lego city and puppet pals!

We had a great time in China and we'll see you guys January 31st!
